Practice Tips for GMAT Preparation

It is not unknown that everybody who prepares for the GMAT uses study material and books, attends prep courses and practices before writing the exam. Sometimes, these alone will not be of enough help to score very high. If your aim is to score a 750+, then you need additional preparation that needs you to work hard and smart. You should invest time and some money to help you sail through the exam. However, below are some tips that are also needed to score well on the exam.

Practice Reading on your Computer: Most prep books and tutors would suggest taking online practice since the GMAT is a computer adaptive exam. To tackle specific sections that are challenging like the reading comprehension, it is better to practice reading texts online. That is because it is different to read on the computer screen than from magazines or newspapers. And, reading online will give you real-time practice for the actual test. Getting used to read tiny letters on the computer screen will make you more comfortable while doing the reading comprehension section. So, it is suggested to read a passage or two on the computer everyday.
Download Practice Tests: The first step towards preparation is to take a diagnostic test and identifying which areas you are strong and weak in. Depending on your score in the diagnostic test, you can chart your study plan. If you are good at one section, let’s say the sentence completion but scored low on the critical reasoning and reading comprehension, then make a plan which lets you devote more time to those sections. Practice by taking sample tests once every week. You don’t have to buy these practice tests, but download them for free from some websites.
Focus on Certain Specifics: Most prep courses only teach what is in the syllabus of the test like problem solving or essay writing techniques but fail to teach one basics. If you think you are not so good at grammar or sentence structures or specific topics like pronouns or idioms etc, you can invest a little time and money to take courses that teach you these. Some short tutorials of these will be available online, may be even for free.
Analyze Texts: The reading comprehension section is very important as it makes up for 1/3rd of the GMAT exam questions. Hence, you must be well-prepared to take the questions smartly and answer them correctly. For the preparation, you may begin reading magazines and articles in newspapers or news websites. Instead of reading them casually, start reading them critically by trying to understand what every paragraph says, layout of the passage – is it a discussion, argument or analysis?, spotting the author’s tone- is he being positive, negative or neutral? and the message he is trying to convey from the passage.
