Strategies for the GMAT Verbal Section

The verbal section of the GMAT measures your skills in the verbal reasoning and language proficiency. The verbal section is composed of 3 types of questions, which are,
  • Reading Comprehension.
  • Critical Reasoning.
  • Sentence Correction.
There are some strategies you need to learn to effectively solve the verbal section of the GMAT. Using these strategies can help you increase the number of correct answers and thus, your score in the verbal section.

General Tips for the GMAT:
  • Buy a GMAT preparation guide and utilize it everyday.
  • Take sample tests and practice exams regularly.
  • Read the questions on the test carefully.
  • Read every answer choice before marking the right one.
  • Use the process of elimination to eliminate the wrong answers.
Tips for the GMAT Reading Comprehension:
  • The answer to every question will be present in the passage.
  • Skim the passage first to obtain an outline of the topic and get an understanding.
  • Topics discussed in the passages are usually based on business, science or social science.
  • Frequently asked questions will be related to the facts, conclusions, main ideas and tone of the passage.
  • Science passages have factual questions following them; social sciences passages have inferential questions and business passages have more complicated questions, some regarding the tone of the author.
  • Use the rough paper wisely and extensively.
  • Read questions first and then the passage, so it will be easier to look for the answers.
  • Read the sentences before and after a statement containing the main idea to get a better understanding of it.
Tips for the Critical Reasoning Subsection:
  • Read the questions before you begin reading the passage as it will help you find what you are looking for.
  • Identify all the assumptions and conclusions that are present in the passage. They may not be necessarily present at the end of the passage, but may appear at the beginning or in the middle of the passage.
  • Working backward can help to solve these questions easily.
  • Remember that answers that may appear to be true may not be the correct answers. Correct answers are of neutral tone. Emotional choices are not right and must be eliminated.
Tips for the Sentence Correction Subsection:
  • Answers will be grammatically correct, so beware of grammatically incorrect answer choices.
  • The answer choice will fit perfectly in the sentence structure. Look for wrong answers that do not fit.
  • Answer choices that change the meaning of the sentence are incorrect.
  • A sentence may consist of more than one error. You must spot all of them to get the question right.
  • Remember that Spelling and Capitalization errors in the questions are irrelevant.
These tips are to help you tackle the verbal section more effectively. Along with following these tips, one has to prepare well, practice loads and be calm and relaxed on the day of the test.
