The GMAT Vs. the GRE

Confused about whether to write the GMAT or the GRE? Read more about each; this might help you decide what test to write.
GMAT and the GRE – Computer Adaptive Tests
Both the GMAT and the GRE are computer adaptive tests, which means both are presented on a computer. Every question in both the tests must be answered, as the answer will determine the difficulty level of the question. The first question will be of moderate difficulty. If the answer is correct, then more difficult and questions carrying more marks will follow. If the answer is incorrect, questions that are easier and carry lesser marks will follow. So, this will determine the overall score of the exam. The algorithm that is used to generate the questions and build the score is similar for both the exams. Hence it is necessary that the first few questions need to be answered correctly in order to get a very good score in both the exams.

GMAT vs. GRE – Test Pattern
The GMAT and GRE consist of verbal sections, quantitative sections and essay sections. The GMAT, in its verbal section contains types of questions like critical reasoning, sentence correction and reading comprehension, while the GRE consists of questions like reading comprehension, sentence equivalence and text completion. In the quantitative section, the GMAT has problem solving and data sufficiency while the GRE has only the problem solving. Both GRE and GMAT contain two essays, one Issue task and one argumentative task.
What is the GMAT?
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is essential for admission into graduate business schools in the United States, Canada and many other countries. Most business schools on their websites will state a GMAT score requirement which the potential student must clear to secure admission in them. Other than MBA programs, some economics and finance programs need the GMAT score as well.
What is the GRE?
The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is used by graduate schools to select potential candidates into their engineering and other graduate programs. All graduate programs except business and law ones accept the GRE as the key to admission. GRE comes in various forms – the general test and the subject tests. To know what type of the GRE you need to take for admission into desired programs, check the colleges’ website you want to join; they might specify their necessity there.
GRE scores vs. GMAT scores
It is difficult to compare both the GRE and the GMAT exams. However, the GRE is relatively easier than the GMAT. In the GMAT, the mathematics and reasoning sections are more difficult, whereas the verbal and vocabulary skills required for the GRE make its verbal section more difficult, especially for foreign students. For all business schools, the GMAT is undoubtedly necessary and the other graduate programs the GRE is essential.
