The GMAT Scores, Average GMAT Score Needed for Top Universities

There are separate scores for the verbal and quantitative sections of the GMAT and a separate essay score. Each score varies on a fixed scale that will be presented in the official GMAT score report that you receive after 15 days of writing your test. These will be sent to the colleges you want to apply to in the form of electronic mark sheets. Your GMAT score report will contain scores of all tests you took in the last 5 years.

Total, Verbal, and Quantitative Scores

The GMAT score ranges from 200 to 800. the average score is around 540. But, almost 2/3rds of the people who write the test score between 400 and 600.

The scores of the verbal and quantitative section range from 0 to 60. However, it is uncommon for scores below 9 and above 44 in the verbal section and below 7 and above 50 in the quantitative section. The obtained scores are then scaled. The scale is fixed and can be compared across all the GMAT test administrations. However, the scale is different for the verbal and quantitative sections and hence cannot be compared with each other. If one fails to complete the test, then the scores till the question attempted will be sent. With each unanswered question, your score will decrease as per the number of questions unanswered.

Analytical Writing Score

The AWA score is an average score of the two essay tasks, the issue task and the argumentative task. Each essay has an independent score and the two are averaged. Each essay is scored between 0 and 6, with half point intervals.
Understanding your GMAT score
Most people get confused about the percentile ranking that is present on their score sheets. For example, if you score a 670 and an 87%, it means of all the people who took the test on the same day as you, 87% of them have scored lesser than you. This is just a ranking that compares your performance with that of the others who took the same exam. The percentile changes everyday, and so it may not be the same for the same score on the next day. Percentile ranking makes comparison easier and so it helps the business schools select candidates based on their skill and talent.
